UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Alert Roster with Eleven Countries
British Foreign Office has added 11 further countries to its official warning register about the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "an international surge in the number of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.
Just last month, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to multiple high-profile incidents including the deadly loss of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or death within 12–48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Methanol is a toxic substance typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not meant for drinking.
While it is generated during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the purification method.
But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and as it is flavorless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.
Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists
Foreign Office minister the minister stated that every traveler should know the indicators of toxic alcohol toxicity.
"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.
"In case something feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."
The full register of destinations listed as carrying a threat of methanol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
