Escaping Single-Parent Holiday Hell to Pet-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Transformation

After my relationship concluded, I naively believed holidays as a solo mother could be straightforward. I soon realized they proved often extremely expensive, otherwise seemed exclusively designed for “traditional” households, or were so cheap that I returned back even more exhausted than before I’d left.

Early Vacation Experiences

The initial endeavor, camping alongside companions, went well until I had to pack up our shelter. Four hours of wrestling with the tent in the heat later, I developed a dislike for the outdoors. Next, an adventurous holiday for solo-parent families. Rappelling and caving were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunk bed wrecked my back. We attempted a budget all-inclusive in Tenerife, but the crowds of nuclear families were overwhelming, and pool-side conversations with fellow women fizzled out because I wasn’t accompanied by a handy partner for their husbands to talk to. A trip to Majorca with a friend and her kids was brilliant, but the expense was staggering.

Finding House-Sitting

Later, last autumn, a friend inquired if we could look after her dogs in Devon as she attended to a ceremony. For one peaceful couple of days, we walked on the beach, and settled near the fireplace in the evening. This prompted to pet-sitting for her friend in Dorset, which proceeded well. Inspired, I subscribed with an annual £99 membership to join a house-sitting website, through which, by looking after people’s pets, you stay at their residences without cost. In just a couple of days, I secured a ten-day house-sit within the county, looking after a retriever called Buzz during the time the proprietors were abroad.

Our daily strolls gave us the chance to discover stunning nature spots.

It was our first sit for strangers, but all anxiety dissipated as soon as we arrived at the beautiful spacious home and met the calm Buzz, who thrived for tummy rubs. Our daily dog walks gave us the opportunity to venture into stunning scenic areas, and, once we came back, we could relax outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters from the television series. There were any expensive tourist traps to traipse through – rather, we perused bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than ever in years, and noticed my bond alongside my child Polly strengthen daily. I don’t afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed achievable again.

Could House-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting may not be suitable for all. Some people prefer zero duties during vacations apart from choosing their upcoming beverage, aren’t into pets, or perhaps find it strange regarding sleeping in a stranger’s bed, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out the trash. But the soothing rhythm of ordinary life, with work stripped out and new places to explore, suits me for me.

This prevents me from descending into complete inactivity, which makes me experience twitchy and strangely hollow. Moreover, financially, house-sitting is a lifeline for a solo mother. Ten days break in a comparable property within the identical area we visited could cost me back approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.

A New Perspective

As for residing in a another person’s house, I discovered it enriching. Although pet-sitting is a exchange, it is equally an act of faith among strangers and creatures, which has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, loving and measured aspect, overflowing with gratitude for the people and places we discover. I have lined up another four days away, caring for a whippet in leafy Surrey, and, in the coming year, I’d like to try pet-sitting overseas. Thanks to a touch of creative thinking, we are able to see the globe from the comfort of home – it just happens to be another person’s.
